Throughout my life, I have always felt valued. I have never been at a loss for hope. I am convinced that this came from two sources. First, God has instilled this in me at the first understanding of the Gospel. “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this; While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” My value to God is unmistakable. Christ died for me. What could prove my worth more than His sacrifice for me? Second, my parents always made me feel loved and accepted. The love they showed, sacrifices they made and hope they instilled in me shapes my optimism to this day. All of us crave both of these things. We need a heavenly hope that can only come from knowing God and salvation through Christ. We also need the hope that comes from being loved and accepted in our earthly family.
Tragically, too many people, especially our children, don’t understand their value to God or experience the unwavering support and love of family. They see themselves as unlovable, worthless and without hope. Andrew Carnegie once compared people to mining gold. “When gold is mined, several tons of dirt must be moved for one ounce of gold; but you don’t go into the mine looking for dirt, you go in search of the gold.”
Some people don’t see themselves like gold; instead they feel more like the dirt. And sometimes we don’t see the gold in others because we can’t see past the dirt on their surface.
Regardless of how dull the shimmer and shine of each of us, underneath we are all priceless. Every person should be treasured. So take a moment today to tell the people who are valuable to you how priceless they are. Tell them that you love them. Tell them they are gold.
“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you,
plans to give you a hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11)
